Today, children from Ark and Hastings Academy, will get the opportunity to visit, virtually, the offices of a top company in Canary Wharf, London.

The event – ‘A Capital Experience’, organised by Career Ready – a national charity that brings together employers and children, will give pupils the opportunity to network, develop new skills and gain an appreciation of the workplace.

Motivational speaker, Action Jackson, whose talks have been described as ‘life changing’ will kick start the day, talking about his own personal experience and the obstacles he overcame to become successful.

Schools will then be paired with a leading company in London attending the event; from BP and Morgan Stanley to Aviva and AstraZenca. They will give an overview of their business, their people and advice on starting a career in the city. Children will then have the opportunity to put a question to the host.

Richard Meddings, Chair of the Board at Hastings Opportunity Area said:

“We are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to career-ready children in Hastings. Our Broadening Horizons programme has already helped to organise a range of events and activities for the children of Hastings, and this is another example that gives them the experience, albeit virtually, to meet and hear from some of the most successful companies in the world”.

Graham Morris, Career Lead at Ark Alexandra Academy, said:

“Action Jackson was inspirational as always, and the students really bought into his message. It was eye opening to visit a major worldwide company like BP and hear from the employees talking about their jobs”.

Year 10 pupils from Ark Alexandra Academy had the following comments from the day:

” I really enjoyed Action Jackson. He was very friendly and easy to listen to. Overall, I thought the day was great and it was good to hear from employers.”

“Action Jackson really did put a different spin on life, and I was motivated by what he talked about. I was also good to listen to employees from BP to gain a sense of what their jobs entails”

“I thought Action Jackson was great to listen to. He has motivated me to now try and work harder within my lessons and to try and achieve my goals. It was also good to hear from employees at BP and the discussion allowed me to see what it might be like to work in such a big company”

Hastings Opportunity Area will continue to support further Broadening Horizons projects in 2021 in schools and with community partners, for children and young people in the area.
