Broadening Horizons Programme Update -December 2020

Dec 14, 2020

The HOA have funded a programme of Athlete Mentor visits and workshops for schools in Hastings, to transform the aspirations of young people. The Athlete Mentors are Olympic, Paralympic, World Championship and Commonwealth medallists, who have a wealth of experience providing inspiration through the sharing of their journey and personal stories of struggle and success. The visits and workshops aim to raise aspirations and can help to tackle declining emotional wellbeing and resilience in young people and attitudes to learning.

Motivational visits have been finalised for delivery in the new year at Ark Castledown Primary Academy, Ore Village Primary Academy, The Hastings Academy, West St Leonards Primary Academy and Hollington Primary Academy.  Athlete Mentor visits were funded by the HOA for 10 Hastings schools last academic year and proved so popular that schools have asked for second visits this academic year.

London employers provided students with a ‘Capital Experience’ for two Hastings secondary schools. Ark Alexandra Academy and The Hastings Academy attended the ‘Capital Experience’ on Wednesday 9 December.

Hosted virtually by Career Ready, high profile national companies, based at Canary Wharf engaged students, through webinars and virtual tours sharing the skills they will need to kick-start a successful future.

The Broadening Horizons enrichment programme continues to be delivered in the local community. Children and young people in Hastings have benefiting from sessions delivered online and in the local community, providing a wide range of activities from sports, arts, music and more. A new grant funded enrichment programme will be launched in the new year, with a programme of school and community activities for children and young people in Hastings, in line with Coronavirus (Covid-19) guidance or with guidance permitting such activities.

The Broadening Horizons team are currently working with secondary schools to develop a plan for the delivery of, adapted ‘Opportunity Day’ career activities, in the summer term. The Opportunity Days will aim to open the world of work and related career paths for young people in Hastings. Further information will be published very soon.
