Hastings Opportunity Area appeals to local organisations to support school attendance

Jul 12, 2021

Over the last two years, we have been supporting schools to improve attendance and reduce persistent absence in the town. Research shows that missing just a few days of school a year can negatively impact on attainment, particularly given the challenging year that children have faced with school closures, due to Covid19.

Hastings has below national average rates for attendance and higher than average persistent absence rates in many of our schools. Many children and families experience complex or entrenched needs.

That’s where you come in! All schools in Hastings have now signed up to the attendance charter, and we are now asking community organisations to show their support by signing up to our ‘multi-agency attendance charter’.

You could be an organisation that is offering a free counselling service, housing advice, after school activities or training opportunities. If you feel that your company can provide a service that may benefit a family in need of support, please do get in touch.

By signing up to our community charter, you will be helping to:

  • promote a town-wide positive approach to good school attendance
  • encourage good school attendance to keep children safe from harm
  • reduce the number of children missing education unnecessarily
  • create a network where information can be shared to provide support
