We are delighted to offer Hastings Primaries, Secondaries and the College a range of free Maths packages this academic year. Below are details for schools on our offers of Maths Entertainers and Competitions.

MATHS ENTERTAINERS

*Nearly all schools have booked their sessions with a maths entertainer. If you have not yet booked a session and are still interested, please email Hastings.OPPORTUNITYAREA@education.gov.uk

THINK MATHS – Year 7 to year 13 (Secondaries)

Think Maths are a team of experienced mathematical speakers and entertainers who visit schools to perform fun, engaging maths shows. They have 15 different sessions available depending on age group and ability. To find out more about what shows they have on offer, click here.

BUBBLY MATHS – 3 – 11 (Primaries)

Bubbly Maths are a team of mathematical entertainers who perform maths sessions whilst engaging audiences by using resources such as soap bubbles and giant balloons. Their mission is to make maths fun for every child by performing fun maths shows. They use fun props to help children discover the maths & science of bubbles and to explore the mathematical fundamentals of shape and measurement. To find out more click here.


MATHS COMPETITIONS

Timetable Rock Stars Competition (TTRS) – Primaries and Secondaries

Times Tables Rock Stars is an online game which is a carefully sequenced to promote daily times tables practice. It is engaging, competitive and improves arithmetic. To visit the website for more information, click here. There is one TTRS competition taking place this academic year:

Mangahigh Online Competition – Primaries, Secondaries & College

Mangahigh covers all concepts of maths such as number, algebra, measurement, statistics, probability and more, all whilst getting children excited by playing online games. To see the games that Mangahigh has to offer click here.

There are two options of week long competitions available:

Monday 8th June – Friday 12th June 

Monday 6th July – Friday 10th July

Maths Marathon – Primaries

The Hastings maths marathon is a town-wide challenge, developed especially for Hastings schools where pupils compete against other schools in a fun outdoor maths activity.

This challenge will get children practicing maths, geography and teamwork as well as getting them involved in daily exercise when taking part. 

In this challenge, children will measure a kilometre in distance and estimate how many times the schools pupils can complete it within in a week. They will find out where different cities are on the map, how far they are from Hastings and choose a destination to aim for. 

Supporting by bespoke learning resources for different age groups, pupils will estimate how many times each child in a school or class group will need to run, walk or skip over week the course of the week to reach their chosen destination. Schools reaching the furthest destinations and demonstrating excellent teamwork and accuracy over the course of the week will receive relevant prizes!

Bespoke lesson plans tailored to all age groups will be provided. Please register your interest by emailing HOA.

27 April – 1 May 

UK Maths Trust (UKMT) – Secondaries

The UKMT is a registered charity who organise national mathematics competitions for 11-18 year old school pupils.

Individual challenges are 60-minute, multiple-choice competitions which encourage mathematical reasoning, precision and fluency. 

How to take part:

  • You enter the competition online by clicking the links below and pay the entry fee. 
  • The HOA will reimburse the fee to your school so please email Hastings.OPPORTUNITYAREA@education.gov.uk to claim this back and let us know you will be taking part.
  • UKMT will post the papers and instructions on how to administer the challenge at your organisation and will arrive at least one week before the Challenge date.
  • On the challenge date, your students sit the challenge under exam conditions.
  • You post the completed answer sheets back to UKMT.
  • UKMT mark the papers and notify you of the results.

There are two levels of challenges with details below:

Individual Intermediate challenge – Year 11 and below
