Extension to parenting support services

For most parents, parenting is hugely rewarding. It can also be challenging, sometimes stretching individuals, couples and families to the limits.  As such, well-being support is an essential resource for all parents, designed to build parents’ skills so they can raise confident, healthy, happy children and teenagers, enjoy stronger family relationships, and create protective, safe environments for their families.

The ‘Open for Parents’ team offer a variety of free parenting from light touch one off support for those facing common struggles, through to specialist interventions for those families experiencing more entrenched or complex parenting issues. One of the mechanisms they use is Triple P, or the ‘Positive Parenting Programme’.

Triple P is an effective evidence-based parenting program, backed up by more than 35 years of ongoing research. It has been shown to help prevent and treat behavioural, emotional and developmental problems in children by enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents.

What are we doing?

Our funding has allowed Open for Parents to increase their team size to eight professional practitioners to develop their existing work.

1. All schools

All 22 schools in Hastings are now directly linked with Triple P, which means all Hastings parents will have free access to services including:

  • evidenced based interventions
  • one-off and longer group sessions
  • short term one-to-one support
  • Programmes for parents and carers of children with Autism / Special Needs and Disability (SEND) / challenging behaviour.

Crucially, every school will have its own named practitioner so that both parents and staff will benefit from a personal relationship with a professional practitioner.  In the mental health sector – this personal connection cannot be overstated, often being the difference between a parent engaging with help or not.

2. Improved training

Increased training for ‘Open Parents’ staff means that a wider and more extensive range of interventions are available to help parents experiencing particular challenges such as partner conflict, stress, mental health, anger management, separation or divorce. There will also be training opportunities for the wider Hastings workforce in basic parenting techniques and strategies.

3. Normalising parenting – visibility and access

We have funded a new digital web-based parenting intervention – Triple P online – to be piloted with Hastings schools. This digital offer can be used as an early intervention strategy or as a more intensive programme, with one offer for parents with children up to 12 and another for parents of teenagers. Our funding has also extended Open for Parents’ social marketing campaign which aims to normalise parenting support. It includes a series of flyers for parents of all primary and secondary school starters.

The overall objectives

Over two years, we will:

  • Ensure Triple P services are available to all parents at 22 Hastings schools
  • Deliver a minimum of 350 – 400 additional family interventions in Hastings alone

All Open for Parents services are free and easily accessible.
