Improving literacy

Priority year 4

Building on the success to date, in Year 4 our focus was on further embedding literacy programmes in over 20 schools in Hastings. We have committed over £330k in Year 4 to enable schools to continue to develop projects that have were already demonstrating a positive impact on improving literacy in Hastings schools. This will be of particular benefit to those children who have lost significant learning due to the impact of Covid-19. The additional funding has also enabled other schools in Hastings to implement these programmes we know are having a positive impact on improving children’s literacy.

Our aim is to ensure that children in Hastings are in the top half of the country in literacy at KS2 and KS4, with disadvantaged pupils making greater progress than disadvantaged children nationally.


Projects funded in Year 4

  • This year we are continuing to fund East Sussex Early years, to increase the skills of staff in early years settings and nurseries as well as Early years foundation stage (EYFS) to support children who have delayed speech and language;
  • Implementing a new initiative to support young children develop core speech and language skills in 4 schools in Hastings;
  • Embedding and sustaining a successful whole school approach to teaching literacy; ‘Destination Reader’ and ‘Daily Supported Reader’ initiatives, across 8 primary schools in Hastings. We will also support a wider group of schools who are already implementing the programme, to share learning and successful approaches with each other;
  • Funding a programme to support children and young people who require additional literacy support, to improve their reading skills – the ‘Accelerated Reader’ project. This year we will be supporting 11 primary schools and 3 secondary schools to implement the programme;
  • Supporting the ‘Get Hastings Reading’ campaign to engage with disadvantaged children to encourage reading through the distribution of books and activities.
